Uncovering the Hidden Gems of an Abandoned City: A Journey Through Urban Decay and Natural Beauty.

Remember.........What happened to Gary can happen to all of us

Presented by The Path: An Agent of Change, Inc., we delve into the transformation of Gary, Indiana, a city that has been left behind in the hustle and bustle of modern urbanization but is now on the verge of a paradigm shift. This is the story of a city's revival, of a community's resilience, and of a project that aims to transform Gary into America's first urban farm city.

Cultivating a new future for Gary

History

The challenges facing Gary, Indiana, are deeply intertwined with historical racial factors and systemic issues. Like many industrial cities in the United States, Gary experienced "white flight" in the mid-20th century, as white residents moved to the suburbs, leaving behind a predominantly African American population. This demographic shift exacerbated economic problems, as the city lost both its tax base and political influence.

The decline of the steel industry disproportionately affected African American communities in Gary, as they were often the last hired and first fired in the industrial sector. This economic disenfranchisement contributed to high rates of poverty and unemployment, perpetuating a cycle of disadvantage.

Moreover, issues of racial segregation and discrimination have played a role in the disinvestment and neglect that Gary has experienced. Redlining, discriminatory lending practices, and unequal access to resources have hindered the city's ability to recover.

While acknowledging these racial factors is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of Gary's struggles, it's also essential to recognize the resilience and efforts of the community to address these challenges and work towards a more equitable and prosperous future.

White flight followed steel mill jobs out of Gary, Indiana. Black people didn't have a choice.
We believe that a scarcity mindset and necessity for survival led to the violence that has plagued this city.
As the economy crashed, so did the people, the buildings, and most importantly, hope.

The city of Gary, once bustling with industry, went through a phase of decline. But now, there's a vision for a new future for Gary. A vision that sees beyond the conventional urban renovation practices and aims to transform Gary into America's first urban farm city. The project aims to convert vacant plots into productive farmlands, providing not just employment but also healthier food options for the community.

Our Community Development Strategy

The revitalization of Gary is not just about physical transformation. It's about uplifting the community, improving living conditions, and ensuring a sustainable future. Our strategy focuses on several key aspects to make this transformation possible.

Workforce Development

Workforce development is a crucial part of our strategy. By transforming vacant plots into productive farmlands, we aim to create job opportunities for the local community. The project will also provide training programs for the community members, equipping them with the skills needed for urban farming and other related industries.

Poverty

By creating job opportunities and improving food security, we aim to address the issue of poverty in Gary. The project aims to not just provide jobs but also to create a sustainable source of income for the community members. Through urban farming, we hope to empower the community members and lift them out of poverty.

Food Security

One of the main goals of the project is to improve food security in Gary. By cultivating productive farmlands within the city, we aim to provide fresh, healthy, and locally sourced food options for the community. This not only ensures a healthier diet for the community members but also reduces the dependence on imported food items.

Mental Health

Urban farming not only provides food and income but also has a positive impact on mental health. The act of gardening has been found to have therapeutic effects, helping to reduce stress and improve mental well-being. By incorporating urban farming into the cityscape, we aim to create a healthier and happier community.

Community Revitalization

The goal of the project is not just the physical transformation of the city but also the revitalization of the community. By addressing issues like workforce development, poverty, food security, and mental health, we aim to create a vibrant and resilient community that will thrive in the renewed cityscape of Gary. This is not just about creating a city oasis, but about cultivating a brighter future for Gary and its residents.
